A STAR IS BORN

An "impossible" star is born. And a hole in space shows what happens once a star is formed. Plus, an out-of-this world zombie! It's your Buzz space roundup.

Caught on telescope: "impossible" starGet out of the way, Hollywood. This star will be brighter than every celeb on the planet combined. Scientists’ European-built Herschel space telescope is their version of Tinseltown’s paparazzi, which caught on tape the beginning of a big star. And we mean really, really big. So enormous, it would block out the sun. Not to mention Angelina Jolie.
Researchers can't explain how what they're calling the "impossible" star came to be. The star was discovered in a star-forming cloud in the
Milky Way Galaxy called RCW 120. And here's the coolest part: Even as a baby star, it is already eight to ten times larger than our sun, and it's still feeding on the gas and dust clouds around it. The star is set to be one of the biggest and brightest stars in our galaxy within the next few hundred thousand years — meaning, this star won't ever be a part of our lives. But hey, if movies are still around in the way future, this gigunda star should seriously considering signing with a talent agent.

How did that get there? That's not the only unexplained mystery in space. That same Herschel infrared telescope also picked up an enormous hole in space. A story from Space.com has a scientist noting, and we quote, "No one has ever seen a hole like this." The surprising find is confounding scientists because it is so unexpected. When a star forms, it's surrounded by gas and dust. (See above.) But how a newborn star shakes off the space debris to emerge from its brith cloud hadn't been fully understood. Until now: Black patches near the stars were always around a reflective gas, NGC 1999.

Everyone figured the black patches near the star were gas, but the telescope would have picked up on that. Finally, scientists realized they were looking at a big, empty hole where the space dust used to be — possibly caused by some of the young stars puncturing a hole with the jets of gas. For researchers, this amazing discovery is a helpful step into understanding how a star is formed.

It wants to eat your satellite's brainFinally, scientists have no idea how to stop a fully powered satellite that has gone rogue and is no longer accepting orders from earth. This so-called "zombie" satellite, known as Galaxy 15 (which carried the SyFy channel), continues along in the Earth's orbit — on a course to interfere with the communications of a fully functioning SES satellite beaming down programming to its customers in Luxembourg. We know, we know: We're just happy it's not us.

NEW BALANCE "SONIC"

New Balance wanted to design a sneaker that reduced waste. Enter sonic welding, a construction process popular in industries involving tech materials and camping equipment. The first company to apply technique to sneakers, the Boston-based company is finally bringing the 574 “Sonic” Pack to the States.

Three 574s were designed for the pack. All of them use solid colored uppers of suede with white midsoles and accent bits on the heel. Upper-matching mesh fills out the toe box and is used for the tongue and ankle area of each sneaker, as well. Grey/Yellow, Brown/Orange and Charcoal/Green color pairings have all been designed and should be at your favorite shop soon.

R.I.P. LENA HORNE

Lena Horne, the ground-breaking singer, actress and civil rights activist who, in 1942, became the first African-American performer to be put under contract by a major studio, died on Sunday, May 9, at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York. She was 92. According to the New York Times, Horne’s death was announced by her son-in-law, Kevin Buckley.

Though her movie career spanned nearly six decades and included a smattering of well-regarded films, like Stormy Weather (1943), Ziegfeld Follies (1946), and Meet Me in Las Vegas (1956), Horne was best known for her singing. Her music highpoints include blockbuster collaborations with Tony Bennett, Grammy-winning recordings of her Vegas nightclub act (1981′s The Lady and Her Music, Live on Broadway, and 1995′s An Evening With Lena Horne), and her Tony-nominated performance in the Broadway musical, Calypso. Horne grew up in an upper-middle-class African American enclave of Brooklyn, raised primarily by her grandparents after age 3, when both her parents left the family. By the time she was 16, Horne had scored a regular singing gig at Manhattan’s Cotton Club. Her knack for dramatic flourish and romantic renditions of jazz standards led to appearances on TV variety shows including The Ed Sullivan Show and The Dean Martin Show, as well as a role in the big-screen musical, The Duke Is Tops (1938). Though she never found the substantial, satisfying work she sought on film, Horne did make an impact, later in life, on TV in recurring roles on The Muppet Show and The Cosby Show.

Horne is survived by her daughter, Gail Lumet Buckley. Horne’s husband and her son both died in 1971, the latter of kidney failure.

WIZ KHALIFA SIGNS WITH ATLANTIC RECORDS

It's been reported by industry insiders that rapper Wiz Khalifa has officially signed with Atlantic Records. Actually putting his ink on the dotted line weeks ago, his last project independently will be "Kush and Orange Juice." When asked about signing with Atlantic Records, Wiz Khalifa said "Whatever people want it to be, that's what it is. I didn't say yes, I didn't say no." Either way, independently, Wiz Khalifa Kush and Orange Juice mixtape did over 1 million downloads and shares across the web.

Obviously a deal that had to be valued highly, it's speculated for Wiz Khalifa to ink a deal there would be a $5MM to $10MM signing bonus probably shelled out. The funding after that is totally fluid. Wiz Khalifa's independent Hip Hop music value is already in the millions. The Pittsburgh, PA rapper topped iTunes with album "Deal or No Deal" and could create a Youtube partnership that's worth 6 figures per year. Videos "This Plane" and "Ink My Whole Body' each have over 1 million views. Throw in the fact he's able to sell out venues and sell merchandise, then estimates can really get crazy. "Wiz Khalifa is worth millions without a question.

Not sure if a recording artist could sign him because he's so big as himself. Most artists turned CEOs look to coach, transform, and co-sign a rapper or singer. That factory format creates their whole image, not really the people in the streets. Wiz Khalifa pretty much got a deal, dropped a deal, then just took over independently. Radios aren't playing him like they did Drake which says he has a more authentic fan base," Says CKHID founder Rodrick Rainey.

NBA INCENTIVE

NBA contract incentives are far more complicated and secretive than we mere mortals could ever hope to comprehend. For instance, did you know that if Sam Perkins had scored 50 points in a single game, the Seattle SuperSonics had agreed to pay for his hair to be braided for a 10-year period? That's probably not true, but that's the thing about NBA incentives — they're kept under wraps and often times arcane in their nature.

Boston Celtics guard Nate Robinson was benched for two games near the end of the regular season, and it cost him $1 million, while saving the team twice that amount.

A clause in Robinson's contract calls for him to make a $1 million bonus if he both played in at least 58 games and made the playoffs this season. Robinson's Celtics are in the postseason, but he played in 56 games. As a result, the Celtics saved the $1 million they would have paid Robinson -- equivalent to a quarter of his reported annual salary -- and an additional $1 million they would have owed in luxury tax to the NBA (most of which would have been distributed to teams with payrolls below the luxury tax threshold).

All I can say is....

JET'S FOOL!!!!

CINCO DE MAYO!!!

In honor of Cinco De Mayo the Pheonix Suns will be playing in their "Los Suns" jersey against the San Antonio Spurs tonight in game 2 of the semifinals of the western conference.

San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich would have gone with the "Los Spurs" jerseys if possible. The team only has one set of that uniform back in San Antonio, having sent the second back to the NBA.

Pheonix lead the series 1-0.

BIG SEAN INTERVIEW WITH HONEY MAGAZINE

RETURN OF ROC-A-FELLA

When Damon Dash pulled a Roc-A-Fella chain out of his vault several months ago and presented it to Curren$y, it was just a celebration of their friendship. Now, the chain means much more. Dash is resurrecting Roc-A-Fella Records and plans to make Curren$y's Pilot Talk the label's first new release on June 15.

The last album to come out on Roc-A-Fella was Jadakiss' The Last Kiss in April 2009. The label had been under Jay-Z's sole custody since the breakup of Hov, Biggs and Dash.

Now that he doesn't work for Def Jam anymore, he doesn't have the right to use the name. So there's no reason for us not to use it. It's there, and it's a brand that's not being used. So I was like, 'I'll take it.' It always meant something to me."

Dash said he secured the new deal through L.A. Reid and Def Jam, which will serve as a distributor for his records.

After Curren$y's album, the next project coming off Roc-A-Fella will be Ski Beatz's 24 Hour Karate School mixtape.
